Meet our Great North Run Team

Introducing the Walking With the Wounded Great North Run team for 2019...

On Sunday 8th September Walking With The Wounded runners will be crossing the start line of the largest half marathon in the world – the Great North Run, in order to support our vulnerable veterans back into independence.

We are thrilled to have a fantastic group of people on board so far, you can find out more about them and read their stories below…

THE DEMOBJOB TEAM

Joanne Foster (Left)
‘Military and ex-military is something that stays close to my heart, most family members have served and my son currently serves.’

Kim O’Brien (Middle Left)
‘As an ex-RAF member this cause is close to me and my family, I believe Veterans are ignored by society and Walking With The Wounded is a brilliant way to bring them to the forefront.’

Adrian Cheesman (Middle Right)
‘I am ex-military and would love to support a charity that recognises the value of veterans, especially those that need extra support to gain employment.’

Kelly Chandler (Right)
‘I am a total newbie when it comes to running or exercise ha. I joined the gym in January ad started the couch to 5k app, so if you ever fancy a laugh you will find me running around South Shields at daft o’clock while swearing at Sarah Millican telling me to keep going. But seriously, I remember a few years back watching a TV show about the Hedley Court Hospital, it was upsetting to watch and our son is hoping to join the Royal Marines, he is 17 now and been in the Marine Cadets for many years. For me it’s going to be an honour to run and raise money for such a wonderful cause, for men and woman who risk their lives and sadly end up with life-changing injuries. It is going to be hard and that’s why I am pushing myself to do this.’

You can follow the teams journey here.

OUR INDIVIDUAL RUNNERS

Ashley Cook  (Left)
‘This year I have set myself a huge target! RUNNING THE GREAT NORTH RUN. I am ex-military and heard about you in the army. I want to give back and help people that have been injured at war. All our veterans who have served our country deserve to be helped in anyway. We should all be grateful for the sacrifices they have made for us. They now need our support to get them through the good and the bad times and to be there for them when they need us the most. It's time to get behind a great cause to help great people.’ Follow Ashley's Journey here.

Helen Hurst (Right)
‘Having turned 50 last year, I wanted to give back to those that have served. I applied to be a Reservist 2 years ago, so to get fit I joined BMF (Be Military Fit). Unfortunately I was turned down, but not due to my fitness levels! But, I had committed to running my part in a 3500 mile challenge for the homeless with BMF (Birkenhead Park). I ended up running 350 miles over a 6 month period. Being part of the BMF family I have got a feeling of friendship that I’ve not experienced before and they have been encouraging!'  Read more about Helen here.

Frank McGuinness
‘I have supported Walking With The Wounded for a number of years and know that they funds I raise help veterans through difficult times and I wish to continue contributing.’ Check out Franks page here.
